Smart Tags – BLE + LoRa + GPS

The SYTRAK smart tag combines BLE, LoRa and GPS technologies in one compact device.

The tag continuously scans for nearby BLE beacons when operating inside a facility. It communicates the location data through LoRaWAN to the gateway and server.

When BLE beacons are no longer available, the tag can use GPS to determine its outdoor location.

The smart tag also includes an SOS button for emergency alerts.

BLE beacons are installed strategically across different areas or zones of the facility.

Each beacon can represent a specific zone such as:

The BLE beacon coverage is approximately 50–80 metres, depending on the RF environment and facility infrastructure. The beacons can also be mounted on metallic structures using magnetic mounting.

LoRaWAN Gateway – LoRa + Wi-Fi

The LoRaWAN gateway provides long-range communication between the smart tags and the backend system. It collects data from the tags and forwards it to the RTLS server.

LoRa communication can provide approximately 500 metres to 1 kilometre of coverage, depending on the environment and RF visibility.

This makes LoRaWAN particularly useful for large industrial facilities, outdoor areas, warehouses, campuses and other wide-area tracking applications.

RTLS Server – Linux Based

The Linux-based RTLS server acts as the central processing layer of the system.

It receives data from the LoRaWAN gateway, processes the location information and sends it to the application backend.

The server manages the tracking engine and provides the data required for real-time visualization on the dashboard.

The system uses RSSI strength to identify the strongest/nearest BLE beacon when multiple beacons are detected.

How It Works

Step 1

Deploy BLE Beacons

BLE beacons are strategically installed throughout the indoor facility.

Each beacon is assigned to a specific zone.

Step 2

Attach the Smart Tag

The personnel or asset carries a SYTRAK smart tag.

The tag continuously scans for nearby BLE beacons.

Identify the Indoor Zone

When the tag detects a beacon, the system identifies the corresponding zone.

For example:
Beacon A → Zone A
Beacon B → Zone B
When the person moves from Zone A to Zone B, the dashboard updates the location accordingly.

Select the Nearest Beacon

If the tag detects multiple BLE beacons, the system uses RSSI signal strength to determine the stronger/nearer beacon and identify the most relevant zone.

Step 5

Communicate Through LoRaWAN

The smart tag sends the tracking data through the LoRaWAN network to the gateway.

The gateway forwards the data to the RTLS server.

OUTDOOR

Step 6

Outdoor Tracking

When the person or asset moves outside the BLE beacon coverage area, GPS tracking provides the outdoor coordinates.

The location can then be visualized on the map through the dashboard.

Step 7

Automatically Return to Indoor Tracking

When the tag comes back within BLE beacon coverage, the system can again identify the indoor zone.

This creates a continuous indoor-to-outdoor and outdoor-to-indoor tracking experience.

Lean Infrastructure

One of the key advantages of the solution is its lean infrastructure requirement.

Instead of deploying separate tracking systems for indoor and outdoor areas, SYTRAK uses a single smart tag that combines BLE, LoRa and GPS.

For indoor areas, BLE beacons are deployed only where zone-level tracking is required.

The smart tag communicates through the LoRaWAN network, reducing the need for extensive communication infrastructure across large facilities.

For outdoor areas, GPS provides location information without requiring BLE beacons to be deployed everywhere.
